At just 18, Taija has been immersed in dance since her early years, but her heart found a new beat when she discovered circus arts five years ago. Under the guidance of Lyne Gosselin at Cirquetastic, Taija honed her skills in trapeze, silks, and hand-to-hand acrobatics, performing at various festivals around Edmonton.
“I adore the trapeze and silks, and I've developed a real passion for acrobatics,” Taija shared. “The training is tough, but that's what makes it so rewarding.”
All her dedication is starting to pay off. After enduring a demanding multi-day audition, Taija was thrilled to be one of 25 performers accepted into the prestigious National School of Circus in Montreal.
“What better way to combine my love for performing with the thrill of being in the air?” Taija remarked with excitement.
Edmonton’s circus scene is experiencing a renaissance. It’s a far cry from the early days when Firefly Theatre and Circus was the city's sole training center. The notion of a career in circus arts is also gaining acceptance and legitimacy.
“My parents were hesitant about the circus at first because it wasn’t seen as a viable career,” said Gosselin. “But now, seeing Taija's success, more young people can envision a future in this field. It’s inspiring.”
Taija’s achievements are opening doors for others. “Taija’s journey shows other kids that with dedication, they too can pursue this path,” Gosselin added.
Firefly Theatre and Circus is set to host its 4th Alberta Circus Arts Festival, where Taija will make one of her final appearances in Edmonton before heading to Montreal. This year, for the first time, the festival will feature shows created in Edmonton, showcasing the city's growing talent pool.
“To see our local talent flourishing and to have a circus school right here in Edmonton is incredibly exciting,” said Stephanie Gruson, co-producer of the festival. “We hope the enthusiasm for contemporary circus continues to grow in Alberta.”
The Alberta Circus Arts Festival will run from June 20th-23rd at La Cité Francophone and Campus Saint-Jean. This event is set to be a thrilling showcase of local talent and a fitting send-off for Taija as she embarks on her circus career.
For Taija, the dream of soaring high is just beginning. And for Edmonton, her success is a testament to the vibrant and evolving circus community in the city.
